100-ton multimission scout/courier, TL10

After the release of the 50-ton cutter, many companies tried to capitalize on the idea of modular ships. The multimission scout was a minor success, being a gutted and redesigned Sulimann-class scout ship designed to fit a single cutter module in a bay.

Acceleration with various modules are: cargo, 1.43G; Class I starport, 1.79G; High-capacity berthing, 1.67G; lab, 1.63G; medical 1.72G; scout support base, 1.59G; scout survey base, 1.64G, Survey 1.83G.  With a 316 ston module, the scout can manage 1G.

Design: 100-ton SL Hull, DR 200, Turret, Heavy Compartmenatlization; Basic Bridge, Engineering, 3 Jump Drive, 14 Maneuver Drive, 20 Fuel Tank, Fuel Processor, Utility, Stateroom, 1 Hold, 1 Vehicle Bay (30-ton cutter module).

Performance: Jump-2, Accel 2.27 G (no module), Air Speed 1,972 mph

C-100 Freighter, TL10

The C-100 was an attempt to build the smallest possible jump-capable freighter that was not limited to mains. An unstreamlined configuration was considered and rejected, as it would have required too much space be devoted to a small craft. In some areas the turret and laster are removed, slightly improving performance. The ship has a crew of four: Pilot, Navigator, Engineer and Gunner.

Design: 100-ton SL Hull, DR 100, Turret with single 250-MJ Laser; Compact Basic Bridge, Engineering, 3 Jump Drive, 12 Maneuver Drive, 20 Fuel Tank, Fuel Processor, Utility, 2 Stateroom, 30 Hold, 1 Spacedock (Air/Raft).

200-ton Aschi Lab Ship, TL10

The Aschi is basically a half-sized version of the Baschelli, with half the lab facilities and no added crew comforts..

The crew consists of the captain, pilot, navigator, comm operator, sensor operator, medic, 2 engineers, 5 scientists/lab techs and a small craft pilot.

Design: 200-ton SL Hull, DR 100, Basic Bridge, Engineering, Utility, 8 Jump Drive, 14 Maneuver Drive, 60 Fuel Tank, Fuel Processor (7.5 hours), 8 Stateroom, Low Berth, Sickbay, 5 Labs, 18.5 Hold, Vehicle Bay (10-ton launch).

400-ton Bachelli Lab Ship, TL10

The Bachelli was designed as some users of the Kugashin lab ship were unhappy with the limitations of it's unstreamlined hull. The Bachelli generally duplicated the performance of the Kugashin, with the exception of greatly reduced small craft capacity (which is considered an acceptable tradeoff). A few crew comforts are added (exercise rooms and lounge/library). Unlike the Kugashin, the Bachelli comes standard with two armed turrets. The ship resembles a flattened sphere with two stubby swept wings (which contain the fuel tanks). The crew requirement is the same for both ships; the only differences are that two lab techs are cross-trained as gunners and another two as reserve small-craft crew (normally only one launch is deployed at a time).

L-100 Liner, TL10

The original L-100 was a C-100 with cargo space converted to staterooms. However, it was quickly apparent that such a configuration would not be financially viable. However, a complete redesign was done, with smaller maneuver drives and bunkrooms in place of the passenger staterooms. This version, capable of carrying up to 80 passengers, was bought by many governments and large corporations. Like the C-100, the turret and laser are not always present. Crew is four: Pilot, Navigator, Engineer and Gunner/Steward/Medic.

Design: 100-ton SL Hull, DR 100, Turret with single 250-MJ Laser; Compact Basic Bridge, Engineering, 3 Jump Drive, 9 Maneuver Drive, 20 Fuel Tank, Fuel Processor, Utility, 2 Stateroom, 5 Bunkroom, Sickbay, 9 Hold, 1 Spacedock (Air/Raft).

1,000-ton Emperor-class Yacht, Emperor, TL12

History: The Emperor-class yacht was concieved of by Count Monstroso in 1061 when he decided he needed something substantially more impressive and useful than a 200-ton Lady of Shallot-class yacht. Well known as a noble who had more Imperial credits than brain cells, the Count approved the contruction of the Emperor after five years of design work, with the ship finally launched in 1067. To make the cost of a one-ship class even worse, he had the ship interior finished with mahogany paneling, alien hand-crafted carpeting and rugs, and brass and ivory fittings. The ship was quickly dubbed 'Monstroso's Mistake' and it's name (the Emperor) raised the eyebrow of Paulo III. Over the next eighteen years the Duke spent more time traveling in the Emperor than at his palace (while this was expensive, many pundits claim that his two-decade vacation probably helped his domain, as he was more hands-off). As an additional touch of vanity, he intentionally had the ship built for operation in planetary atmospheres so that his subjects could look up and marvel at the Emperor, silver with gold and purple trim, as it landed and lifted off.

After Count Monstroso's death in 1096 (due to natural causes at age 113 while in bed with his favorite mistress Sophia, aged 33), the ship passed to his son Farchi, who also rose to the rank of Count (which is fortunate, since a lesser noble would have difficulty affording to maintain such a ship). Farchi, slightly smarter than his father, takes the ship out to visit worlds under his control perhaps twice a year for 6-15 weeks at a time. His two eldest children each get the yacht for three weeks a year, unless he has pressing business.

Accomodations: The yacht can carry 4-8 passengers in four standard-sized staterooms and 3-6 more in three luxury (double-sized) staterooms; all staterooms are of the highest quality (even those of the crew). The exact allocation of staterooms can be very complicated, depending on the ranks of nobles on board. The only two things that are certain is that non-nobles go in regular staterooms and the owner takes one of the luxury staterooms. Normally, Count Farchi and his wife Desdemona each take a luxury stateroom, with the eldest child aboard getting the third. There are also offices for the Count and his wife (as well as 8 other work cubicles, if needed for minor functionaries). However, the offices are seldom used, the study, trophy room and two holoventure suites seeing far more activity.

The study has a large number of books, scrolls and holodisks, few of which anyone on the ship has ever read (however, all titles or writers are popular with the old nobility). Assorted other knick-knacks from alien cultures adorn the room (this the work of Countess Desdemona). On the other hand, the well-stocked bar is used quite often. Located adjacent to the study (the doorway next to the bar) is the trophy room. While Count Farchi has a few preserved animals in the room, the main use is the viewing of holovids shot during his hunting expeditions (several expeditions are available for guests to experience through the holoventure suites).

Small Craft: Although streamlined, the Emperor also carries two small craft. The pinnace is intended for general ship's duties when there is not a desire or need to land the yacht. The gig is fitted out for short-term tours by the mother ship's passengers (this may also include hunting expeditions which Count Farchi is so fond of). Two air/rafts are also carried, which may be loaded in the small craft as needed. For budgetary reasons, the TL12 small craft originally fitted had to be exchanged for TL10 craft shortly after Count Monstroso's death.

Crew: Under the old Count, the crew was a crack staff, formed from decorated Navy veterans and bright Academy graduates. Given how much time he spent aboard this Emperor, this was neccesary. Standards have slipped a bit under Count Farchi but the crew is still highly skilled and motivated. The quality of the crews of the escort ships (see next) are similar.

Other Information: Because the Emperor would be a major target for pirates, dissidents or terrorists, it is almost always escorted by three 400-ton patrol cruisers which are specifically selected for the task. The luxury fittings increased the cost of the ship by 20%.

5,000-ton Conestoga-class Colony Transport, TL10

The Conestogas are old colony tranports, still in use primarily because they can be leased cheaply. Unlike many colony ships, the Conestogas only serve to get colonists from point A to B. Once the colonists, their cargo and small craft have been landed, the Conestoga turns around and heads back to civilization.

Up to 200 colonists are carried in low berths, including most of the small craft crewmen (who are also colonists). Some (normally the new colony's leaders) occupy staterooms. Cargo averages 7.1 dtons per colonist on the ship, including cargo pre-loaded in the shuttles and cutter passenger modules.

Most of the small craft stay with the colony. The exceptions are four fighters, all shuttles and gigs, two modular cutters, two passenger modules and all fuel skimmer modules. Most of the small craft the colonists keep were bought by them well-used, or purchased by some agency financially backing the colonization. Depending on the final purpose of the colony, small craft and cutter modules can vary greatly. Also, colonists later brought to the planet rarely bring small craft or cutter modules.

200-ton Fulshear-class Salvage Ship, TL10

The Fulshears are among the smallest salvage ships in use. In many ways, their small size is the reason they are so rare -- they have small crews, a small hold and a low cradle carrying capacity (375 stons). However, they are much cheaper than the 800-dton Cortez-class salvage ships, making them good as 'entry-level ships.'

Crew: Captain, Pilot, Navigator, Medic, Gunner, 2 Engineers, 4 Technicians/Salvage Specialists; Pilot is in single stateroom, all others double-bunk

200-ton Orchard-class Small Craft Tender, TL10

The Orchards serve as mobile repair and rest facilities for in-system small-craft and their crews. They are generally used when several small craft must operate continuously some distance from high- or downport. While hangar space is limited, the tender can handle small craft as large as a modular cutter without difficulty.

200-ton Wharton-class freighter, TL10

The Wharton's were designed due to dissatisfaction with the cargo capacity of the far traders. Rather than use the part liner/part freighter strategy, all available space was used to carry cargo. The captain and navigator have their own cabins, while the engineer and medic must share one. The Imperial Navy uses a havy-frame version, which adds MCr 3 and 7 stons.

200-ton Sealy-class liner, TL10

In 1084, shipwright Arthur MacKenzie sought to design a ship smaller than the Stellar-class 600-ton liner but carrying approximately as many passengers. In 1091, the first Sealy left the shipyards at Regina. Although the crew takes up one stateroom each, there are still fifteen available for middle and high passengers, as well as provisions for four low passengers. Cargo space is minimal however.

200-ton El Campo-class tanker, TL10

El Campo's are commonly used both in and out of the military (the version here is the civilian version; the military version adds at least modest stealth and emission cloaking). It can carry a reasonably large amount of fuel, which can be refined in just under 3 hours. They are normally used by large (1000 dton +) unstreamlined ships and around highports. In an effort to maximize tankage, an unstreamlined version is available, adding 40 dtons of fuel. Many buyers choose not to have the jump-drives installed (saving a fair amount of money), though some users find the jump capability useful (especially the military).

200-ton Columbus-class explorer, TL10

The Columbus-class explorers were designed as a private venture in a compromise of the IISS' Suliemann and Donosev. While the Columbus ships are very capable, they failed to interest the bureacracy of the Scout Service.

Crew: Commander, Pilot, Navigator, Communications Officer, Engineer, 6 Survey Specialists, 2 Gunners

Sulieman III-class survey scout

Conceived by a long forgotten IISS bureaucrat who felt that the Donosev-class ships were too expensive to build and maintain, the Type III scout was designed to carry out as much of the Donosev's functions as possible, but in a 100 ton hull. Needless to say, the tight fit resulted in a ship that was hated by the IISS.

In order to fit all the necessary scientific gear into such a small hull, all the crew is forced to double-bunk for extended periods (of course, Pytheas crews have to do this too) and cargo space is insufficient. The lack of a modular cutter proved not to be a real disadvantage; the Type III is streamlined and doesn't need a landing craft.

The Type III served in active duty for 14 years before being declared as reserve equipment (to the great relief of countless field scouts), then 8 years later the ships were stricken from IISS lists. At around the same time they were being mothballed or scrapped, a commander of a Pytheas-class scout cruiser requested two of the ships for use on an extended expedition; when used in conjunction with the larger ship, the superior science gear of the Type III (as compared to the Type I) demonstrated the ship's value. Soon, the Type III's were being attached to many Pytheas as a matter of routine procedure.

It took 22 years, but a use was finally found for the much maligned Sulieman III-class survey scouts.

Sulieman IV-class scout carrier

Of a similar origin to the Type III, the Type IV was designed to replace the more costly 200-ton modified far traders used by the IISS. Unlike the Type III, it has proved to be a complete bust; one (modified) far trader can still carry more men and more cargo than two Type IV's, and for a lower cost. The smaller size and similarities to the standard Sulieman kept the Type IV in service for awhile, but after 11 years all Type IV's (except a handful kept to ferry replacement crews to express boat tenders and scout cruisers) were sold off at a very low price.

The privately owned ships are used to carry middle passengers (only), and are marginally competitive financially with purpose-built transports (only because they  can be bought very cheaply from the IISS).

Another proposed variant would have had only 2 staterooms and 30.5 cargo, but was never followed up on.

Crew: Pilot and Engineer, plus up to 14 passengers; in IISS service, one or two passengers with appropriate skills will
help the pilot on the bridge; in private service, add a Navigator and Medic.

Design: 100 ton SL hull, DR 200, basic stealth, basic emission cloaking, heavy compartmentalization, basic bridge, engineering, 10 maneuver, 3 jump, 20 fuel, utility, 2 fuel processors, turret, 1 spacedock (1 air/raft), 8 staterooms, 6.5 cargo (+3 turret)

Frost-class Low-Berth Liner, TL10

Originally designed to fill a niche market, carrying a large number of passengers cheaply, the Frost-class liner soon was taken into use for the transportation of prisoners and emergency evacuation of battlefield causalities. It has also been used to move large number of army troops to and from staging areas, though any vehicles, heavy weapons and supplies must be carried in another ship (usually a militarized version of a subsidized merchant). It has the capacity for almost two infantry companies. Frosts could also be used to transport colonists to a new world, though again, their equipment and supplies would have to be carried on  another ship. During the Fifth Frontier War, they were also used to carry prisoners from the battlefield to POW camps.

400-ton Ekiir-class Merchant Cruiser, TL10

Despite the impressive name, the Ekiir-class ships are basically converted 400-ton Akkigish-class subsidized merchants. They have only half the cargo space but are better protected from pirate attacks. Due to the relative cost-ineffectiveness (2x the cost of an Akkigish, 1/2 the payload) of the design, they are normally only used by governments and megacorporations in frontier regions for cargos that need to get somewhere safely (but a military courier is not an option).

Extra low berths were installed to allow a frozen watch to be carried, if required. The external cradles give the ship secondary tugboat and salvage capabilities, though the already poor performance is made even worse. For this reason, the cradles are often unloaded, though if the owner (or captain) is strapped for cash, he may have no choice. Note that due to the 'oversized' jump drives, the ship can still make Jump-2 with as much as 130 dtons carried externally, though it requires an extra 26 dtons of fuel for the J-drive, usually carried in normal tanks in the carried ship (and pumped in through pipes in the cradle arms). The two 130-dton carriers below were specifically designed for the Ekiir, but it more commonly carries a 100-ton shuttle and a 30-ton external fuel tank (treat as a drop tank, except that it isn't actually dropped).

Crew: as Subsidized Merchant, plus two gunners

Design: 400-ton SL Hull, DR 500, 2 Turrets (each with a 250-MJ laser, Missile Rack and Sandcaster), Basic Stealth, Basic Emission Cloaking, Modules: Basic Bridge, 1 Engineering, 48 Maneuver, 16 Jump, 80 Fuel, 4 Low Berths (capacity 16), 14 Staterooms, 1 Sickbay, 1 Utility, 2 Fuel Processor, 6 External Cradles (750 ston capacity), 1 Vehicle Bay (10-ton Launch), 86 Cargo

130-dton cargo carrier

This ship is designed to be used with the Ekiir-class merchant cruiser, though it can operate on it's own as an in-system cargo shuttle. It is fairly rare, due to both  it's nonstandard hull size and the comparative rarity of the Ekiirs.

This ship is designed to be used with the Ekiir-class merchant cruiser, though it can operate on it's own as a long-range in-system passenger shuttle. It is fairly rare, due to both it's nonstandard hull size and the comparative rarity of the Ekiirs.

Crew: Pilot, Co-pilot, Engineer, Steward, Medic, up to 30 passengers

Design: 130-ton USL hull, DR 100, Modules: Basic Bridge, 1 Engineering, 8 Maneuver, 26 Fuel, 18 Staterooms, 1 Sickbay, 1 Utility, 18.5 cargo

Statistics: LMass 293.65, Cost MCr 11.756, HP 18,000, Size Modifier +8

Performance: Accel 1.09 G (normal load)

Ashi-class Scout Merchant

The scout merchant is seen outside Imperial space, looking for new trade markets. It is a reasonably self-sufficent ship, with a fair number of small craft (the gigs and fuel skimmer are required due to the ship being unstreamlined, the fighters because the ship often travels where it can't call for help) and a modest cargo hold. While it can carry on trade itself, the Ashi's normally open up trade routes and hammer out agreements with newly found trading partners for merchants following along behind them.

About half the crew has normal cabins (the Captain has his own cabin); the crews of the small craft and the security team take the bunkrooms. The bunkrooms can handle up to 44 more personnel, if required, but rarely carry more than a dozen (usually extra technicians and cargo handlers) and there is one extra stateroom.

Crew: Captain, 2 Pilots, Comm Officer, Sensor Ops Officer, Navigator, 4 Gunners, 5 Engineers, 2 Medics, 4 Survey Specialists, 4 Trade Specialists, 10 Small-Craft Crewmen, 10 Ship's Security

Trion-class Light Merchant

The backbone of the Trion Empire's merchant fleet, these ships provide a compromise between the 200-ton far traders and 400-ton subsidized merchants. Two crewmen (usually the Captain and Navigator) get single staterooms; the rest of the crew must double-bunk. A 20-ton gig is provided for utility work (in many cases, it is replaced by a 10-ton launch and a pair of air/rafts, or, as a Q-ship, a pair of 10-ton fighters).

Crew: Captain/Pilot, Navigator/Co-Pilot, Comm Officer, Sensor Ops Officer, 3 Gunners, 2 Engineers, 1 Medics

Design: 300-ton SL Hull, DR 100, 3 Turrets (each with a 250-MJ laser, Missile Rack and Sandcaster), Heavy Compartmentalization, Modules: Basic Bridge, Engineering, 45 Maneuver, 9 Jump, 60 Fuel, 4 Low Berths (capacity 16), 6 Staterooms, Sickbay, Utility, Logistics, 2 Fuel Processor, Spacedock (20-ton gig), 45.5 Cargo

Sulieman IC-class scout/courier

This is more than just the TL12 version of the venerable scout ship; with space gained from more efficient M-Drives, they carry basic survey gear and a higher capacity J-Drive. They pay for this in reduced cargo space and a much higher cost (nearly 50% more than the TL10 Sulieman I, before adjusting for tech level).

Crew: Pilot/Comm Officer, Navigator/Sensor Ops, Gunner/Medic, Engineer

Design: 100-ton SL Hull, DR 200, one turret (three 405-MJ lasers), Basic Stealth, Basic Emission Cloaking, Total Compartmentalization, Modules: Basic Bridge (hardened), Nuclear Damper, Probe Module, Survey Module, Engineering, Utility, 5 Maneuver, 3 Jump, 20 Fuel, 4 Staterooms, Sickbay,  Spacedock (holds 1-dton, usually 1-3 air/rafts), 2 Fuel Processor, 10.5 Cargo

Statistics: LMass 245.15, Cost MCr 62.53, HP 15,000, Size Modifier +8

Performance: Accel 2.43 Gs, Jump 2, Air Speed 2121

Variants: A "long-legged" version exits, with Jump-4 but only two staterooms and 5.5 tons cargo. It costs MCr 48 and has 2.06 G acceleration

400-ton Prince of the Black Star (custom design)

The Prince of the Black Star is a custom vessel commissioned some twenty years ago by former IISS scout Kelvin Lane; to this day, it is not known how he was able to afford such an expensive ship. When he died recently, the ship was left to his grandson, Jack Lane, also a former IISS member. Most of the crew are holdovers from the elder Lane's crew.

The Prince is designed primarily for private exploration, with basic instruments for surveying systems and worlds, as well as studying any lifeforms on those worlds. It carries an unusually large security detachment, for reasons not entirely known. At one time the ship carried two ATVs in the spacedock; it now has three air/rafts instead. Although the basic ship is TL 11, all weaponry (including missiles) is TL 10.

Crew: Pilot, Navigator, Sensor/Comm Operator, 2 Engineers, 3 Gunners, Medic/Steward, 3 Small Craft Pilots, 2 Lab Techs, 10 Security

Design: 400-ton SL Hull, DR 200, three turrets (#1: two 250-MJ lasers, one sandcaster; #2: one 250-MJ laser, one sandcaster, one missile rack; #3: one 422-MJ plasma gun), Heavy Compartmentalization, Modules: Basic Bridge, Astronomical Sensors, Planetary Survey Array, Engineering, Utility, 29.5 Maneuver, 16 Jump, 120 Fuel, 13 Staterooms, Sickbay,  2 Low Berths, Vehicle Bay (20-dton gig), Spacedock (15 dton capacity), 3 Fuel Processor (5 hours), Workshop, 2 Labs (Xenobiology, Xenobotany), 30.5 Cargo

2000-ton Fantasy-class luxury liner

From TransStellarLines Travel Brochure, published 147-1114:

"The Fantasy-class ships carry 144 passengers in comfort and style, served by a well-trained and polite crew of over fifty. Our ships feature many activities, including four holoventure suites, two large swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a four-star restaraunt, two nightclubs and a null-gravity handball court."

The 26 extra crewmen are all for passenger service, including stewards, cooks, waiters, stewards, musicians, though many are cross-trained for more important ship tasks in emergencies. Of the 144 staterooms available for customers, 40 are combined into double sized suites and 4 are combined into a VIP suite (so there are actually 123 'real' staterooms for passengers). Of the 100 single staterooms, there are (locked) doors connecting adjacent pairs. The low-berths are present only for emergecy medical use -- they carry no paying customers.

Crew: Captain, Pilot, Navigator, Sensor Operator, Comm Operator, 3 Engineers, 6 Gunners/Security, 3 Medic, 2 Small Craft Pilots, 26 Service (includes Stewards) (56 total)

Design: 2000-ton USL Hull, DR 100, six turrets (unarmed), Heavy Compartmentalization, Modules: Command Bridge, Auxillary Control Station, Engineering, 5 Utility, 97 Maneuver, 60 Jump, 400 Fuel, 200 Staterooms, Sickbay,  3 Low Berths, Cell, 4 Civilian Holoventure Suites, 4 Swimming Pools (combined into two), 3 Ballrooms (combined into one), 3 Restaraunts, Null-Gravity Handball Court, 2 Offices, 17 Escape Capsules (170 total capacity), Spacedock (two 30-dton Ship's Boat), Workshop, 240.5 Cargo

100-ton Copernicus-class survey craft

The original ship in the Copernicus-class was a test refit at a scout base of a badly damaged Suileman scout ship. The fuel tanks and what was left of the jump drive was removed. More sterooms, additional survey gear and a few other components were wedged in (some of the outer staterooms are rather uncomfortable, even by IISS standards). In fact, the bridge and maneuver drives were about the only internal components left intact. It was then taken for field testing aboard a Pytheas-class scout cruiser, which used it to speed up system surveys.

The tests were successful and more conversions were ordered. It was decided that Suilemans which were due for major jump drive overhauls would undergo the the refit. One at a time, scout/couriers were converted; while this drastically reduced costs for the IISS, it meant that every ship was laid out slightly differently, depending on which shipyard did the work. As of 1118, some 107 have been converted and a further 75-125 conversions are planned over the next 36 months. Altough not quite as capable of the Suileman IIIs, they are cheaper (and also superior to the 50-ton survey boats also used by the IISS). There is also some move to design a new ship from scratch, but it is unlikely that a prototype would be seen before 1120.

It is not uncommon to find a Copernicus stripped of weaponry, although most crews prefer to keep them, just in case (since the ship can't jump out of a dangerous situation).

Crew: Captain, Pilot, Navigator, Sensor/Comm Operator, 2 Engineers/Technicians, 1 Gunner, 1 Medic, 8 Survey Specialists

Design: 100-ton SL Hull, DR 200, one turret (three 250-MJ lasers), Heavy Compartmentalization, Basic Stealth, Basic Emission Cloaking, Modules: Basic Bridge, Engineering, Utility, Probe module, Survey module, 20 Maneuver, 8 Staterooms, Low Berth, Sickbay, 5 Hangar Bay (5-ston exoskeleton, 3 air/rafts, 0.9 dtons free), 11 Cargo
