Valkyrie I medium mecha, TL 8

(The basic Valkyrie has been radically changed from the previous version)

This represents one of the more formidable mechs in my campaign. While it packs a reasonably good punch and is quite mobile, it is extremely expensive and somewhat heavy for what it can do, demonstrating the difficulty of designing effective mechs, especially at low Tech Levels.

The Valkyrie is intended to replace wheeled and tracked scout vehicles in terrain that would severely restrict their mobility (heavy woods and cities are two of the most common). It has reasonable punch against light armored vehicles and infantry and can stand up to light autocannon or heavy machine gun fire, though they are still vulnerable to anti-tank weapons. If the sensors are enhanced (see Valkyrie II, below), it gains a useful anti-aircraft capability.

Extra power cells can be carried in the empty space (especially the legs, which can hold one 1-hour cell each). A one-hour (264 kW) cell is $10,454, 105 lbs and 2.09 cf. A Valkyrie II uses the same cells, but it gets slightly less duration

Valkyrie II medium mecha

Although the Valkyrie (I) was popular, some buyers wanted better protection from eneny sensors, as well as better ability to detect the enemy. The result was the Valkyrie II, which appears much the same as the original. The main changes are that the PESA and AESA are now placed in a 4' periscope in the head (turret) and that the basic IR cloaking and sound baffling have been upgraded to radical. Cost has also increased by 100%, but the mech is only slightly heavier. The new turret can easily be retrofitted to the Valkyrie I: it adds $84,000 and 28 lbs, and reduces turret empty space to 0.4 cf.

Also available is a body-mounted sensor periscope (which is not included in the stats below). The basic model incorporates a 25 mile no-targeting radar (Scan 19), x50 LLTV (+5/+10) and a rechargable power cell good for 8 hours, with an 11' periscope. Stats are $54,480, 124.8 lbs, 2.5 cf and 6.25 kW. A slightly more advanced model has a 25 mile no-targeting AESA, x50 LLTV and 20 mile thermograph (Scan 19) with a 10' periscope. A rechargable power cell lasts for 8 hours. Stats are $311,980, 224.8 lbs, 4.5 cf (which will just fit in the Valkyrie II) and 50kW. Either can easily be fitted to any Valkyrie I or II on the assembly line, but with some difficulty can also be fitted to existing designs.
