Type 14 Light Tank (TL8)
The Type 14 was designed as a smaller, cheaper companion vehicle to the Type 12 medium tank. The Type 14 is unusual for modern tanks in that the main gun does not use an autoloader, but carries a fourth crewman. Also, the basic vehicle uses passive infared; some buyers quickly swap this out for a more capable (though more expensive) thermograph. Compare to the Bobcat light tank, which costs ten times as much but has significantly better sensors and defensive features. However, for a nation that has plenty of manpower but not much of a budget, the Type 14 can help provide some semblance of an armored force. Also, some armies buy the Type 14 to use as an advanced training vehicle.
The open mount containing the chaingun is located adjacent to the commander's hatch, on the left top of the turret. The gun can be fired internally, but with only minimal traverse. The loader's hatch is to the left; sometimes, a pintle mounted MG (7mm to 8mm) is rigged next to it. A small hatch on the left rear of the turret is used to manually eject empty shell casings from the main gun, unless the vehicle must remain sealed. The driver also has a hatch, which is kept open if possible. Finally, there is a belly hatch that all crew members can enter (or exit) through in an emergency.
