S-900 multipurpose diesel/electric submarine (TL8)

Designed by AltusMare Watercraft Inc., the builders of the Hermes submarine, the S-900 is more than an enlarged version of that vessel. It is faster and longer ranged with better sensors and non-combat equipment. While it costs three times as much it is more than three times as effective. The pop-up turrets have been retained, as they have some value against aircraft and light watercraft (eg, those that cost less than a torpedo). However, the S-900 is designed more for open-sea operations and it would be rare for the boats to need the turrets, unlike the Hermes which is as much a patrol boat as it is a submarine.

The captain has a cabin to himself and the two most senior officers share a cabin. All other crewmen have single bunks. Like the Hermes the S-900 is capable of delivering special forces troops (8 in this case) using two Lemures minisubs (or other watercraft). A small workshop has been added and provisions for up to 84 days are provided. Each torpedo tube is fed from a  three-round magazine; two tubes are often dedicated to carrying the SeaScorpion missile (or equivalent), depending on the local situation. If the boat is on a minelaying operation, they are carried in the drydock and released from there.

A note about the name; 'S' stands for submarine and '900' for it's approximate displacement tonnage. The Hermes was retroactively renamed the S-225, but it's original name is far more common.

Note: A stealthier version is also available; increase stealth, sound baffling and IR cloaking to radical, add M$25 to the submarine's cost and add 9 tons to loaded weight. Crush depth uses suggested errata in GURPS® Atlantis™. The advanced submarine hull is also in GURPS Atlantis.

Design Notes
Frame is very cheap, very heavy for 32000 cf body and two 25 cf turrets. Surface features include sealed, submarine hull, total compartmentalization, basic stealth, basic sound baffling and basic IR cloaking. The boat has advanced submarine hydrodynamic lines.
