It was realized that conventional tracked support guns could not
adequately keep up with legged scouts. A larger design was started,
usable as either a tank destroyer or an assault gun, depending on the
armament fitted. The primary version fits the 76.2mm L-11, the same as
the T-34.
On paper, there is supposed to be one RSU-76 and one RSU-107 in each
walker scout company HQ, but many companies have only one vehicle
(usually the
RSU-76). They are
intended to provide heavier fire support to RT-2 or RT-3 units. Some
thought was given to organizing RSU-76's into tank destroyer companies,
but existing tracked vehicles were considered sufficient for this role.
(Nothing in this design is exclusively Russian; it could be used by
most nations without any chnage to stats)
The RSU-76 uses 3.4 gallons of gasoline per hour at routine usage.
