Work on the PT-76 began shortly after the end of WWII, despite the lack of success the Soviets had with amphibious tanks during the war. It uses half of the engine in the T-54 and uses the same basic chassis as the later BTR-50 and ZSU-23-4. The PT-76 entered service in 1952 and by the mid-70's was in service throughout the Warsaw Pact. The PT-76 was also exported to countries outside Europe, seeing service in the Mid and Far East. In all, over 25 countries have used the PT-76 in some form. It was replaced by the BMP in most units, though retained by the Naval Infantry due to its good swimming characteristics (compared to other amphibious AFVs) Some 7000 were built by the Russians until 1967, with about 2000 of them being exported.

Design Notes
Frame is heavy and cheap for 800 cf body, 200 cf turret, and 480 cf
tracks. The hull and turret are sealed. The cannon is partially stabilized.
The turret traverses at 45 degrees per second electrically.
New Weapons
