G5 torpedo boat

In WWII the Soviets navy was primarily a coastal force. It operated several types of torpedo boats; the G5, with some 300 built starting in 1934, was the most numerous and important. It was somewhat similar to British MTBs, with the two torpedoes in rear troughs, where they slid backwards into the water, then moved forward (requiring the boat to sharply veer to the side so as not to be struck by it’s own torpedo). Unlike the British boats, the G5 was made of aluminum, which led to corrosion problems.

The G5 has a crew of seven. It mounts two 12.7mm DShK HMGs on open mounts, one forward of the bridge and the other atop the rear of the superstructure. The engines burn 155 gallons of diesel fuel per hour of routine usage. The G5 can travel 230 miles at 48 mph.

Design Notes
Design speed was 42 mph and design draft was 2.8’; historical numbers were substituted. Hull weight (and cost and HPs) were divided by two to reduce weight, but loaded weight still had to be reduced 21%.

For any rolls involving the engines, use HT 9.

Variants
Earlier boats in the class were of lighter displacement (13.7 tons) and used more reliable engines (HT 12). Draft is 2.5’.
