Background
Lazarus was apprenticed to a wizard early in life when it was discovered
he had a natural aptitude for magic. Though he studied hard for many years,
he was taught only a handful of spells of questionable value. Lazarus,
impatient with his teacher, began looking through his mentor's grimores
when he could safely do so, and taught himself several spells of a dubious
nature.
Eventually, the wizard caught Lazarus going through his personal tomes
and threw out the brash young man, warning him never to return. Lazarus
returned to his family's country home, but discovered that it had been
sacked and burned by barbarians during a recent wave of attacks, all the
family wealth gone and all his family dead.
With only a handful of coppers left, he returned to the city only to discover the wizard had left to travel to the far south for some obscure purpose. Lazarus tried to earn money doing simple tricks on street corners, but was barely able to survive. In dispair he turned to pickpocketing and was unfortunately caught by the Thieve's Guild. The Guildmaster saw some promise in the boy, and offered Lazarus membership, with any money he made the next year going to the guild. Since his only alternative was death, Lazarus accepted. Before the year was up, however, he had become a satisfactory thief, aided by his magical skills. At the end of his servitude, he quietly slipped out of town and began working freelance in other cities.
